Seven members of the Rye High School Wrestling team will be making the journey to the state wrestling tournament held at the Pepsi Center in Denver and beginning today (Thursday) with first round matches at 3 p.m.

“We had a little bit of favorable bracketing,” assessed Head Coach Dean Decker, “but mostly our boys just wrestled really hard.

Decker was especially pleased with freshman Riley Prichard at 113 lbs. who had to come back through the wrestle backs and pin a tough opponent in the slot for the final state bound spot and came through. Pritchard is one of two freshmen who will be attending the state tournament. He lost a fall in his initial match, won a 9-4 decision, lost a fall and then won his final match by a fall to earn a trip to the Pepsi Center. Pritchard will face Sergio Campos, Hotchkiss, in his opening match at state.

Colton Sims, 120 lbs., won the silver medal. Sims, a junior, won his first round by a 7-0 decision. He lost by a fall in the finals. Sims will face Santino Mendoza from Rocky Ford. Rocky Ford qualified all 14 wrestlers in their Regionals and are odds on favorite to win the state crown.
