Heavyweight Derek “Big D” Samuelson came within one match of placing in the State Wrestling Tournament held at the Pepsi Center last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Samuelson, six teammates and the 799 other top wrestlers in the state gathered to determine who was the best in each weight class.
In the first round Samuelson, who placed fourth in the regional’s, faced Chase Flynn, Strassburg, who finished first in one of the other three regionals. Flynn got the takedown at 1:26 in the initial period and pinned Samuelson at the 1:29 mark.
Samuelson then faced Justin Tucker of Swink in the back half of the bracket. Samuelson got a takedown with :39 left in the first period for a 2-0 lead. In the second period Samuelson took both wrestlers in the neutral position and 18 seconds into the period got a second takedown. The Swink wrestler managed an escape and Samuelson scored another takedown for a 6-1 lead at the end of two periods.
