Karen Shaw describes her talents in portrait photography, making goatmilk soaps, crocheting and felting as a hodgepodge mix, and very eclectic. The Colorado City resident brings this talent to the Greenhorn Valley Farmer’s Market, as well as several other markets, holiday bazaars, the local Fall Fair, online sales and custom ordering.

Originally from the Northwest, Shaw has practiced these crafts for over 30 years and says she recently learned wool felting for her soaps from local friend and artist, Deb Smith. By wrapping the homemade soaps with wool, the soap lasts longer and shrinks to fit the bar with use, and becomes a reusable scrubby.

“I continue to learn and grow. With each market I attend I add something new to my display and my inventory has grown,” explains Shaw. “The soap I make is different from commercial soaps in that it contains glycerin. This moisturizing ingredient is often removed from commercial manufacturing.”
