A series of special team miscues cost the Rye Thunderbolt football team 28 points in the second quarter in their season opener against Centauri last Thursday with the ultimate 40-0 mercy rule shortened loss against the fourth ranked Falcons.

“They have a good football team,” said new coach Pat Baker. “We made some early mistakes and lost the momentum and our young kids just couldn’t recover.”

The Thunderbolts never quit. Unable to move the ball on the ground against the two Centauri defensive tackles who weighed between 275-285 pounds, the Thunderbolts went to the air. Quarterback Peyton Baker was 14-20 passing and logged 177 yards.

Bryce Benz, a sophomore, caught six of those passes for 63 yards and freshman tight end Hayden Polk caught four balls for 92 yards in the aerial assault.

For all practical purposes there was no running game. Benz had five positive yards on four carries but with sacks the Thunderbolt ground game was negative for the night.
