Have you ever longed for a really heartwarming experience? Come by Kmart on Valley Backpacks Voucher Day. You would have witnessed 61 children and teens having the time of their life as they shopped for coats, jeans, boots, hoodies and more with their Valley Backpacks clothing vouchers. Rye High School and Craver Middle School students each received $175. Rye Elementary School and Pre-school students each received $150. There were families with three kids in the program; that amounted to over $500 for clothing for their children. Yes, there were a few tears amidst the joy and laughter. Members and friends of the Valley Backpacks manned the tables to check the items in the carts ensuring they were all school-appropriate. Kmart provided a dedicated register with two wonderfully engaged, efficient and patient cashiers.

This was actually phase two. Phase one was providing school supplies and backpacks for 86 children. Earlier in the year Pamela had met with the principal (or guidance counselor) of each school and they gave us our marching orders. They told us how many of their students were in need of our program; they gave us their school supplies list and the names of the students who needed clothing vouchers. The rest was up to the women of VBP until the schools received a call saying: “come pick up your supplies.”
