The New Year of 2017 began with a story about local resident Bob Cook helping Boy Scout Troop 24 of Pueblo West to find a camping area the very small troop could afford to use to gain the time and skills to earn various merit badges. Garnett Sanders, father of one of the scouts had been friends with Cook for years when Sanders owned a computer business in Pueblo and Cook was one of his first clients. Cook offered his acreage east of Colorado City to the troop to use. In addition to Cool the Rye Fire Protection District spent an entire day with the troop helping them earn other merit badges.

The weather had a lot of impact in the first quarter of the year. Wind gusts as high as 97 m.p.h. were reported in the valley on January 9th. San Isabel Electric reported approximately 3000 members were without power for a significant amount of time. Even by late Wednesday- two and a half days from the primary blasts over 1000 homes continued without power.
