Loving like God loves! Isn’t that what a relationship with God really is all about? His nature is love. His essence is love. He IS love. How could I honor Him more than to love like Him? How could I reflect His image more than to love like He does?

How could I do more for everyone around me than to love them like God loves them? How could I do more for myself than to love others like God loves them? To love God with all my heart and soul and mind and strength and to love my neighbor as myself- what is that but to love like God loves?

In creation God revealed His love as He planned everything out and then executed His plan in exactly the right order and manner. He created each thing good in such a way that when it was done, it was VERY GOOD. He created in such a way that His life gives and sustains life in every living thing. And it was done in such a way as to make all of life focused on a relationship with Him. In all that lives, that relationship is one of dependence. But when God created man, you and I, in His image and in His likeness, the relationship became not only dependence, but love.

We have just celebrated the coming of God into the world in the person of the Christ Child, Immanuel, God with us. But the beauty of Christmas is not just a baby, it is the love of God expressed through His Son. Ephesians 2:4-6 reminds us “God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ…and raised us up with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,” (NASB).

Then later in that same letter the goal is stated, that we might “know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that [we] may be filled up to all the fullness of God.” (Eph. 3:19, NASB)
