“It’s painful to hear people say, ‘I wish I could have...’ It breaks my heart,” said Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care’s Medical Director, Lauren Smith, D.O.

Dr. Smith said she was two years in to her internal medicine residency program when she realized she could do it better. “They have two choices—more and more is not better. This is the most important conversation a doctor is going to have with their patients,” she said, recalling a patient with pancreatic cancer with whom she had The Conversation. Dr. Smith received a note from this patient, thanking her for referring her to hospice. “I went to a couple of hospice lectures and that was the beginning.”
