Wrestlers Win First Tournament in Over Thirty Years

The Rye High School Wrestling Team claimed their first team trophy since current Head Coach Dean Decker was a senior wrestler at Rye High. The Thunderbolts had four first place medals in the victory.

For the first time since February 1985 when Rye High School Wrestling Coach Dean Decker was a senior, the Thunderbolt Grapplers have won a wrestling tournament. Last Saturday the team scored 146.5 points and garnered four gold medals to win the 38th Annual Bennett Tiger Invitational Wrestling Tournament, a two-day event at Bennett, Colorado.

Michael Atencio improved his season record to 14-1 with a victory in the 113 lb. weight class. Atencio scored a fall in the second period, won by forfeit and pinned his man in the finals in 38 seconds to win the championship.

At 126 lbs. Colton Sims won the gold with a fall in 50 seconds, scored a second fall in the third period and won the gold medal round with a 22-7 technical fall. Sims is 14-4 on the season.
