I was pleased to discover that Pueblo County Sheriff Kirk Taylor will be running for a fourth term as County Sheriff. He was the keynote speaker at the Greenhorn Valley Chamber of Commerce Banquet held Tuesday night.

The insanity that we deal with in this litigious society can cause an ordinary citizen to pull out their hair, let alone the top lawman in the county. There is a reason Taylor usually wears a hat. For instance, in the news this week were stories that Pueblo County had to get a second K-9 drug detection dog because a Colorado panel of judges ruled that dogs that detect marijuana violate the rights of people who are searched or detained if the dog detects the marijuana, which is a legal drug. No probable cause if the dog detects pot! Get a new dog says the judge.

In his speech Tuesday, Taylor shared the solution of one national organization to the jail overcrowding. Let the 72-75% of the inmates who are in jail awaiting trial free. After all they are innocent until proven guilty, right? And of course, they will all show up for trial, won’t they?
