It was one of those envelopes that come with complete instructions on how to get into it. It was about normal size but even to the eye, you could tell that it was thicker than your average envelope.

On the two shorter sides of the rectangle were instructions to bend, fold and tear at the perforation. Along the long top side was the admonition to pull up on a tab that took up about 60% of the entire length. Only on the bottom were there no instructions necessary. It was covered with a series of minute, hardly legible form numbers and assorted letters and numbers that made no sense except in an episode of NCIS when they were preparing to figure out a cipher.

The return address indicated the document was from the Social Security Administration. I briefly flirted with the idea of throwing it in the trash without so much as another look. The enrollment period had just ended and the daily barrage of mail from the government, Humana, Anthem, ad nauseum trying to get me to select their plan when I re-enrolled still left a funny, metallic taste in my throat.
