Even though they are one of the lowest funded school districts in the state, Pueblo County School District 70 has been working on staying ahead of the safety curve since they adopted a program called SchoolSAFE in 2008.

According to Greg Keasling, Dean of Pupil Services, the technology and practice have put the safety and protection of students, staff and facilities at the forefront.

Keasling joining Superintendent Ed Smith recently in testifying in the state Capitol in support of legislation that would provide $7 million to school districts to purchase technology that allows for direct communication with first responders, as well as within individual buildings.

They know of what they speak. The technology made its way into District 70 In 2008 through the joint effort of the District, the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office, the Pueblo Chemical Depot, and the National 911 Program. The district purchased and installed the equipment and trained administrators and staff in the proper use.
