Cherie Toussaint, District 70 Athletic Director, would like to see the district high schools be the national leader in reducing the number of concussions in football with the use of “guardian caps” which the district experimented with during practices last football season.

During the 2017 football season, Pueblo County, Pueblo West and Rye High School made use of 230 caps purchased by the district to ascertain if they could lower the number of head related injuries during football season. The softshell helmet covers the regular football helmet and statistically can absorb up to 33 percent of the impact of a collision.

In a report to the District 70 board Toussaint said Monte Pinkerton, Pueblo West Football Coach and Jeff Wilson, Pueblo County football coach came to her with the idea to invest in the caps to slash the risk of head injuries and lower the concussion rate.
