First responders of the Rye Fire Protection District received an eight percent increase in pay retroactive to the first of the year according to Fire Chief Steve Bennett at the regular meeting of the board of directors. The monthly meeting is held at the Colorado City Metro District on the third Monday at 5:00 p.m.

The raise is part of the promise made by the Board of Directors to the community before the voters approved a mill levy increase for the district. The amount of the raise was discussed in executive session at the January meeting and voted on by the board when they came back into session. In the March meeting Bennett announced that the increase, including the retroactive amount, had been disbursed.

A brief power outage on Monday also gave the RFPD a surprise opportunity to test the newly installed generators at both fire stations. Bennett reported the generators worked flawlessly. The generators became an issue after the frequent power outages last winter. The board determined the stations needed enough power to operate the stations in emergencies. Bennett also reported the generators had come in slightly under cost.
