In 2016, AAA did a study on road rage. They found that nearly 80 percent of all drivers expressed “significant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the past year.”

I experienced that feeling Monday morning, and I personally hope I never feel that way again. But let me backtrack. I went through a period of my life when I had definite anger issues. Some of it is my own fault. I cultivated anger as an athlete.

In wrestling my goal was to make the other wrestler angry. I believed that if they were out of control it gave me a definite advantage. In football, I worked on playing angry. Especially in college I was usually outweighed by 30-60 pounds. I played center at about 200 pounds. The nose guards and linebackers were heavier than that. One game I was outweighed by 100 pounds. I felt like anger made it easier to get the job done.

I don’t know if any of that had anything to do with later anger, but for a period in my life I worked very hard to learn to control my anger. I still get angry but I always feel in control.
