Catherine Gallegos has run five marathons. She has also run half marathons, 5K’s and 10K’s. In fact, she has been running since middle school. In high school she specialized in cross-country, the 800 meter run, the long jump and a relay or two.

Small wonder Gallegos came to mind when Rye High School was looking for a girl’s track coach for this season. The Alaska native thought about it and received a lot of encouragement from her sophomore daughter, Lauren, a four-sport athlete.

“I was made aware of a need,” she assesses, “and I decided to help.”

In her first year as a coach, the third-grade teacher at Rye Elementary School absolutely loves helping coach and describes it as a lot of fun. And although her title is Girls’ Track Coach she works with the entire track team.

Gallegos has been in the area for about 15 years and got here when she met her future husband, Mac, in the fishing canneries of Alaska. In addition to her sophomore daughter, who plays soccer, golf, volleyball and basketball, they have a daughter in the sixth grade, Morgan.
