Star Journal and Sunday Chieftain Sunday May 26, 1974

The year of Our Lord 1935 was one to be remembered. First, it was the dust storms which plagued the High Plains in late winter and through the spring. Then the rains came and what hadn’t blown away was washed down the river.

A dust storm of the magnitude of those which plagued the plains states in those years defies description. One correspondent for The Pueblo Chieftain at the time explained: “If you want to know how it is to be in a dust storm, put a vacuum cleaner over a pile of dirt, turn it on and put your head in the bag.”

Or there was the newspaper columnist in Great Bend, Kansas, who wrote: “If Lady Godiva had staged her famous ride down Main Street at high noon today it Iould have been in vain. No one could have seen her.”
