Live like the gate was left open. Have you ever noticed how fast your animals can run when they spot an open gate? Give them a two to five minute or five hour lead time and you’d be amazed how many miles they can be from home. If you aren’t home and they go for a joy run all you can do is hope someone recognizes your livestock, catches them and calls you or the Sheriff’s Office or Brand Inspector’s Office.

Identification is the key, along with proof of ownership, be it during an evacuation or a running spree or, perhaps, if they are stolen.

In a recent discussion with Scott Darnell, EOC Liaison, and Donna Darnell, Site Supervisor for the Pueblo County Community Animal Resource Team (C.A.R.T.) , they identified one of their biggest problems is locating the owners of animals that are either found or hauled in during times of a disaster.
