Pueblo, CO: A 23-year-old man was arrested Sunday after welding outdoors and causing a brush fire that burned nearly 15 acres near Rye.
Pueblo County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Christopher Forell for firing woods or prairie (CRS 18-13-109 (2) (a)) after a spark from a weld he was doing caught brush on fire that quickly spread to two adjacent properties. Pueblo County is currently under Stage 2 fire restrictions which strictly prohibit the use of a welder outdoors unless it is done in an area 30-feet in diameter that is clear of all flammables.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area of 7300 Bondurant Road at about 4:50 p.m. Sunday on the report of an expanding brush fire. When deputies arrived, they spoke with Forell, whose property is where the fire originated. Forell admitted he was welding outdoors when he noticed grass burning underneath the area where he was working. Forell told deputies he tried to put the fire out but it spread quickly.
