He’s a long way from where he was born in Angoon, Alaska. Head Cross-Country Coach T.J. Blackhurst started his teaching career in Angoon in 1997 where he taught multiple subjects and coached basketball. The next year he moved to Minnesota, taught one year, came to Colorado and taught one year in Trinidad and Pueblo then went to Beulah for four years. In 2005 he came to Rye and has been there ever since, teaching Botany, Geology and Earth Science.

Blackhurst was always a runner in high school and college. He ran cross-country and track his freshman year for Linfield College in Oregon but transferred to Adams State in Colorado, where he met his wife of 23 years, finishing his degree in Biology in the fall of 1996.

T.J. has three boys, one is 20-years-old and then two eleven-year-old twins. The oldest was a cross-country runner and a wrestler for Rye. “The twins will probably follow in their older brother’s footsteps “
