Veterans Day, which is November 11, is marked with numerous ceremonies and traditions. One if the most popular traditions is the distribution of the traditional red poppies. Groups gather in front of businesses asking if you would like to make a donation and receive a poppy. While most of us are happy to donate a little and walk away wearing a poppy, many are unaware of the meaning.

The remembrance poppy is an artificial flower that has been used since 1921 to commemorate the service men and women killed in war or conflict. These were inspired by the World War I poem, "In Flanders Fields", written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae after witnessing the death of his friend and fellow soldier. Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the churned up earth of soldiers' graves in Flanders, Beligam.
