There are 14 weight classes in high school wrestling. In the 56th annual Bob Smith Tournament held in Wray last Saturday, Wray had a full team, scored 252.5 points and came away as champions in their own event.
Yuma also had 14 weight classes filled they took second of the 15 teams attending. Rye High School placed 3rd with 111.5 pts. They only fill six weight classes. But the Thunderbolts have finished fourth or better in every tournament they’ve been entered in.
At Yuma the six weight classes led to six for six in the medal category. Two gold, two silver and two bronze. The half-team Rye fields each week is ranked in the “Top 10” 2A teams in the state, the first time that has ever happened. Four of the individual wrestlers are ranked in the “Top Ten” in 2A. And they keep winning.
