The government shutdown is over Ė for three weeks. Thatís how long the temporary funding will last before the country and a portion of the nationís federal employees may have to, once again, face the same situation.

Whichever side of the aisle you are on, Republican or Democrat, is there any sense to repeating this process again in three weeks? Doesnít seem to make any sense to me but the purpose of this column isnít to lobby for my opinion of what should happen. Instead, I will share some statistics about the shutdown itself.

A large portion of the data I am using comes from the Washington-Post. There are nearly 12 million workers in the United States. Of that number, about 2.0 million of those work for the Federal Government, the largest employer in the United States.

The funding for approximately 800,000 of those workers lapsed, I believe on December 22. The other 1,200,000 federal workers were covered by different funding bills and were unaffected by the shutdown.
