There was a very illuminating discussion among directors of the Colorado City Metropolitan Board on Tuesday evening, January 29, 2019, at district offices on Bent Brothers Blvd. The topic, interestingly enough, was the acquisition of a road grader and served to illustrate the frustration board members in a small cash strapped governmental unit face while working to serve the needs of constituents who elected them to office.
The current option is a budgeted $15,000 to cover grading operations in late spring and early fall, accompanied by a prayer that Mother Nature cooperates while sending us an average amount of precipitation. If the district experiences the wet winter and spring for which many valley residents pray, the district is scrambling to find additional funds to cover extra rental costs. It ‘s an option that clearly chaffs directors Bob Cook and Greg Collins. “Once we’ve spent that money on renting a unit, it’s gone, out the door, and we have nothing but more rental expense moving forward,” remarked Cook. It was a sentiment shared by Collins.
