Over 120,000 decaying mustard-agent mortar shells will have to be detonated at high temperature rather destroyed in the water-based neutralization chamber at the Pueblo Chemical Depot. The edict came from federal officials and was released at a meeting of the citizen advisory committee last week by Greg Mohrman, Project Manager for the Pueblo Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant. The rounds are to rusty and decomposed to be sent through the multi-phase process.

A recommendation last week from the Legislature’s Joint Budget Committee was to give the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo an additional 42 beds for mental health restoration treatment. The hospital currently has 449 beds. The move is designed to get the institution out from underneath a lawsuit in federal court. The increase in beds would need an additional 62 staff people.
