On Monday, March 18, and Tuesday, March 19, the Rye High School Knowledge Bowl team competed against schools from around the state before taking home 1st in the 2A division. Just 59 teams qualified for state out of a total of 250 teams statewide, with 11 in the 2A division. The team, consisting of seniors Catie Wolyn, Connor Voss, Gabe Slade, Akash Patel and junior Alana Schaak as an alternate, has been coached by Rye High School's Cole Mcgee during their tenure at the high school. This group of seniors has striven for a State Title since their freshmen year by practicing most days of the week during lunch, taking on academic pursuits beyond the normal curriculum, and honing their mind in a variety of readings and courses.

The teamís effectiveness has been bolstered by the membersí diligence and work ethic over their high school career. Hours of extra study time have contributed to the team being a menace in the Knowledge Bowl setting, as well as more capable students overall. Akash Patel and Catie Wolyn (both of whom are looking into the medical field) have mastered the range of knowledge required for answering Biology, Anatomy and Physiology related questions. Gabe Slade has taken 300 level Math courses at CSUP to boost the teamís confidence in math questions, and Connor Voss has read extensively in classical and historical novels and nonfiction to assist in Literature and History questions. In addition, all members also have an extensive repertoire of difficult Advance Placement(AP) classes, with the four seniors having taken more than 35 AP tests between them.

Placing 2nd in the 3A division last year, in a dramatic near win during the Championship Round, this yearís team then brought home the first Knowledge Bowl state title in School History since the founding of the tournament in 1978.
