If you know Chief Steve Bennett of Rye Fire Protection District, you know he’s one of the hardest working public servants you’re ever likely to meet and that he misses lots of scheduled days off. When he absolutely, positively has to have a day off, what does the fire district do? It goes to Rye Elementary School and recruits two bright third graders to be, “Chief for a Day.”

Last Thursday, March 28, 2019,Rye Fire Engine 23 parked in front of the elementary school to collected third graders Weston Quillen and Celia Trujillo, both nine years of age, from the classroom to Station Two to be Chief for a Day.

Upon arrival, the Chiefs received a guided tour of the station, sprayed water from a 2” hose, ate a delicious lunch of barbeque chicken prepared by firefighter Chris Kochis, experienced the sights and sounds of rolling code three (well, sort of), rolled fire hose, and asked all the questions that occurred to them.
