Track Team Works Toward State Tournament

Senior Madison Gookin making her final throw for the shot put during the Pueblo City/County Championships at Dutch Clark Stadium on April 25. Gookin threw 34-07.00 for 4th place. She also was in the discus event with a final throw of 83-00.00. Madison Gookin will be awarded a 4-year track scholarship to York College in Nebraska for the shot put and discus. She threw 32' in shot put last year and Is throwing near 35' this year with her eye on 38'.

The countdown for the Rye High School track athletes to be in the top 18 and earn a berth to the state championships continues to wind down with the state tournament on tap for May 17-19.

Last week the Thunderbolts appeared in a pair of smaller meets beginning with the City-County Championship on Thursday featuring the county schools.

The 4X800 meter relay team composed of Audrey Maroney, Emma Lesser, Jolee Ortiz and Tess Zupancic won the silver medal in that event with a season best time of 10:46.59. That time is currently the 7th best in the state.

Maroney also won a silver medal in the 3200-meter run. She placed 2nd in a time of 12:44.53. She currently has the 8th best time in the state in that event. Audrey Himmelberg took 3rd in the long jump with a season best leap of 14 11.75.
