“Our family was thrilled,” shared Nancy Espinoza when she was asked by Dennis Maroney, Greenhorn Valley Chamber of Commerce President, if the Chamber could rename their annual fishing derby the Reuben Espinoza Kids' Fishing Derby.

The event, according to Espinoza’s wife, was “dear to Reuben’s heart.” That event will take place on May 11 for area children 15 years old and younger at Lake Beckwith, Colorado City, from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

“Reuben was always here to help,” commented Maroney. “He will be missed.”

Alamosa born Espinoza moved to the valley in 1979 where he and wife Nancy resided. The Espinozas had six children and 13 grandchildren and were active in the community.

The couple have a combined 27 years with the Colorado City/Rye Lions Club. Nancy will soon be the new president of the organization. They have also been long time members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

But it was in Espinoza’s capacity as a board member with the local chamber that he began doing what he could to facilitate a smooth fishing derby.
