On Tuesday, April 30th, the Rye Thunderbolt baseball team took on State rival Peyton in a long awaited contest. Rye Coach Graham started ace right hander Damon Elarton, who threw four complete innings before being relieved by Brice Benz for the final three. The battery of Elarton/Benz scattered eight Peyton hits.

Rye hitters only managed six hits, but they were timely, scoring seven runs. Rye’s first run came by way of the batter being hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Coach Graham commented “They threw their lefty at us, which kept us off balance.” Number seven hitter Jackson Ortiz stood out in this game, knocking in two RBIs. Ortiz also played a “strong defensive game” according to Graham. Rye won the contest seven to four.

On Friday, May 3rd, the Thunderbolts travelled east to Fowler for a double header. In game one, Coach Graham started Damon Elarton. He kept the game close through the top of the fifth inning, where the score remained one to one. In the sixth inning, Rye scored two runs to take the lead. Brice Benz came in to relieve Elarton. In the seventh inning, Rye bats came alive, scoring ten runs. Elarton hit two over the fence homers in the contest. Rye won the game, thirteen to three.

In game two, Graham started Freshman Brock Benz, who threw for four innings. He was relieved in the fifth by Robert Buford. Coach Graham said that Rye’s hits were “spread out “ throughout the game. Rye won game two easily, eighteen to three.

On Tuesday, May 7th, it was nice weather for ducks. It was about 50 degrees with a light mist. Rye coaches, players, and volunteers worked all morning to prepare the field for play. They did a great job! Rye played the second game of a “Pig Tale” event where Walsenburg and County Line met at noon, and Rye would then take on the winner. County Line beat Walsenburg with a final score of 12 to 1.
