The Greenhorn Valley Book Club’s selection for June was Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” An English novelist born in 1775, Austen’s other popular books were: Northanger Abby, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park and Persuasion.

Austen referred to Pride & Prejudice as her “own darling child” and after its publication continued to imagine how the lives of her characters might have evolved. Her plots often explore Victorian women’s dependence upon marriage in pursuit of social standing and economic security.

Many prominent men have enjoyed Austen’s novels over the years. Winston Churchill credited her with helping win World War II. Rudyard Kipling read her works to his wife and daughter each evening to help raise their spirits after the loss of their son in World War I.
