Two horses, at separate locations, in Weld County have been diagnosed with vesicular stomatitis (VSV) making Colorado the third state in 2019 to have confirmed VSV cases and resulting in quarantine of those animals

Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease that mostly affects horses and cattle, and occasionally, swine, sheep, llamas, and alpacas. The transmission of the disease is attributed to insects, such as black flies, sand flies, and biting midges. The incubation period ranges from two to eight days. Reluctance to eat or drink and excessive salvation are often the first signs of the disease. First symptoms rapidly progress into visible oral blisters and sores on the muzzle, tongue, teats, and coronary bands. Lameness and weight loss may occur.

While VSV rarely infects humans it is possible, so precautions should be taken if handling affected animals.

The Colorado State Veterinarian's office issues the following tips for livestock owners:

~ Strict fly control is an important factor to inhibit the transmission of the disease.

~ Avoid transferring feeding equipment, cleaning tools or health care equipment from other herds.
