A $10,000 donation is helping a 150-year-old cabin, thought to be lost, to be relocated, restored and preserved for educational use.

The cabin, which is located on a working cattle ranch in Beulah, was discovered by the ranch’s current owners, when they began to renovate a structure on their property in 2018. A newer structure had been encasing the original cabin for a century and a half, unbeknownst to the property’s various owners.

A team of volunteers with the Beulah Heritage Preservation League (BHPL) is working against a lack of time and funding to relocate the more than 150-year-old cabin to a public location before the first snowflakes fly in 2019.

In its new location, the cabin will be incorporated into Pueblo District 70’s STEM and historical educational curriculum. The cabin will be used as a tool for teaching historic construction techniques and local history.

The 18- by 45-foot cabin was originally built in 1868 by Pueblo pioneer Pete K. Dotson. Dotson, with Charles Goodnight and Annie Blake, acquired nearly 50,000 acres of what is now Pueblo and Beulah in the Nolan Land Grant.
