In reference to the two-part letter concerning the national popular vote in the last two editions of the View, the author quotes verbatim an article appearing to argue the that the number of counties that vote for a presidential candidate should determine our national elections. Although the number of counties that voted for Trump greatly exceeded the number of counties that voted for Clinton, the Clinton-supporting counties far exceeded the Trump counties in contribution to the productivity of our economy as measured by GDP.

Neither of these points is relevant.

People vote; counties do not. The amount of land occupied by those people voting is similarly irrelevant. Our system of government is based on the number of votes from people, not land area. “High population centers” are no more than places where lots of people live, and each of us American citizens is supposed to get one vote, regardless of where we live. The political affiliation of people living in urban versus rural areas is similarly irrelevant to the discussion of whether the person elected President should ideally be the person the majority of people voted for.
