TJ Blackhurst has begun his 8th year as the Head Coach of the Rye High School Cross Country team. Last year he graduated a lot of Thunderbolts especially on the boys’ side of the team. His girls’ team this year, however is loaded with potential.

The four boys and seven girls on the team include sophomores, Audrey Maroney and Clarrisa Peterson. Maroney took seventh in the state last season. Rachel Lopez has also returned to the team and is getting back in cross county shape. One of the key elements of a possibly state bound squad in Senior Lauren Maroney. Although the elder Maroney has not turned in the times of her younger sister, according to Blackhurst it is her every single day work ethic and positive attitude that has worn off on the entire squad.

Assistant Coach Heidi Garner is in her fifth year with Blackhurst and the two have watched the program grow from three athletes to last year’s largest turnout ever.

Blackhurst molds his focus to his athletes and describes each season as a “process.” This year Blackhurst has scheduled less meets so that his team isn’t always getting ready for a meet or loosening up after a meet.
