Lest we forget the attack of September 11, 2001.

Nineteen men hijacked four fuel-loaded United States commercial airlines bound for west coast destinations. A total of 2,977 people was killed in New York City, Washington D.C., and outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania

At the World Trade Center site 2,753 people were killed when a pair of highjacked planes were intentionally crashed into the north and south towers. Of that number 2,016 were employees in the two towers.

The first tower was hit at 8:46 a.m. and stood for 56 minutes before it collapsed. The second was hit at 9:02 a.m. and stood for 102 minutes. The fire from the attack burned for 99 days.

Three hundred and forty-three New York City firefighters died. Twenty-three were New York City Police officers and 37 were officers with the Port Authority.

The youngest victim in the attack was two. The oldest was 85 years old. The average age of those who died was 35 to 39 years old. Men losing their lives outnumbered women 3:1.

At the Pentagon crash site, 184 people were killed when hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the building.
