For the first time, more than 500 offenders participated in an electricity education program at the Trinidad Correctional Facility’s annual career fair.

On Tuesday, September 10, San Isabel Electric and their power supplier, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, helped offenders understand what jobs may be available to them when transitioning back into our communities.

In an email, Department of Corrections teacher Kim Bird told San Isabel Electric and Tri-State why it’s important for companies like theirs to participate in this career fair.

"We are trying to give our offenders an authentic experience. In order to do that, we truly need the participation of companies like yourself in order for them to internalize that sense of what is possible,” Bird said.

The offenders are working towards re-entry initiatives before they’re released. The co-ops were able to show inmates low-cost schooling and training career paths that may be available, as well as demonstrating how electricity works.
