Michael Atencio and Cole Miller captured a gold medal at the Regional Wrestling Tournament held in Blanca and along with Riley Prichard, who placed fourth will make the trip to the state wrestling tournament held at the Pepsi Center in Denver beginning today (Thursday).

Atencio (32-3), defending state champion, wrestling at 120 lbs. had a first-round bye, followed by a fall which took 66 seconds, and a final victory by a score of 12-0 over Dale Van Matre of John Mall.

Miller (37-4) followed a similar path winning his first match by a fall in 80 seconds, winning a 16-0 technical fall and pinning David Arellano of Buena Vista in the finals in 49 seconds. Miller placed second in the state last year.

John Mall won a narrow team victory by a single point over Centauri. Rye placed 6th in the 17-team tournament.

Prichard placed 4th at 113 lbs. After a first-round bye, Prichard lost a fall, won a 6-5 decision, lost a 6-2 decision, and finally won a trip to state with a no contest victory over Damian Lopez of Monte Vista.

Three Thunderbolts were one match shy of going to state, taking 5th place. Aidan Dennison at 170 lbs.; Trevor Perkins at 195 lbs., and Devin Samuelson at 220 lbs., needed only one more victory each to make the trip to Denver but fell shy. Gage Schaap also participated for Rye in the Regional Tournament.

Atencio will begin the defense of his state championship with Ayden Mathews (26-15) of MANC. Miller will take on Case Buford (30-11) of Crowley County in his first match. Prichard will battle defending state champion Cade Rockwell (35-5) of Wray in his first contest.

The tournament begins Thursday at 2 p.m. The first session on Friday is at 9 a.m. with a second 2A/3A session at 5 p.m. Saturday begins at 10 a.m. with the finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“We had hoped we would get a few more kids through,” shared Head Coach Billy Jack Forell. “Now we will focus on bringing three medals home from Denver. It’s up to the guys. There are no easy matches. You have to wrestle your best.”
