Pueblo, CO: The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens of a recent telephone scam where a caller poses as a representative from the IRS or a Sheriff’s deputy and threatens the individual with a warrant if they do not respond to a request for payment. The Sheriff’s Office has received calls recently from residents reporting calls they have received from an individual claiming to be from the IRS or the Sheriff’s Office. The caller requests gift cards be purchased and sent to them or they will be issued a warrant. The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to never give personal or financial information over the phone unless they are certain it is a reputable source. If you are unsure whether the call is legitimate, hang up and call the department or agency to verify the legitimacy of the call. If an individual has given personal or financial information to a suspected scammer, sheriff’s investigators recommend they contact their financial institution and obtain credit reports to ensure their identity has not been stolen or fraudulently used. If you receive similar phone calls or have information about this scam, please contact the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office at (719) 583-6250.
