“……And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Some of you may recognize the scripture as the last part of the Great Commission. Jesus was sending his disciples throughout the world to spread the gospel and make disciples. He knew it was a difficult, but critical task, and He closed with the assurance that He would be with them always.

We would do well to remember that assurance today, would we not? Rioting, cities literally burning to the ground, an unparalleled spike in violent crime in the face of defund the police actions, 8% plus unemployment and, to top it off, Covid-19, one remedy of which is enforced isolation.

Where does it end? With a contested election in November? With more violence and bloodshed in the streets of metropolitan areas? With more pandemic wars between the left and right? I wish that I knew the answer to that but, alas, I do not.

Here is what I do know. The promise Jesus made over two-thousand years ago is just as true, valid, and reliable today as the moment the words were spoken from the Savior’s mouth. If we are not careful, it is easy to misplace that promise in all the background noise and drumbeat of the media, election, economic pressure, worry and fear about tomorrow, and family stress, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Perhaps, send up a prayer when things turn dark, bleak, and the negativity is overwhelming. “Jesus, you promised to be with us always, even to the end of the age. I claim that promise and beg your presence at the center of our lives to lead, guide, instruct, and protect us as we navigate terribly uncertain times. In the name of Jesus, we pray and ask these things, Amen.”

And, when your perspective is refreshed and renewed, send up a prayer of thanksgiving.
