A long, long time ago, more years than I care to count, I entered Marine Corps boot camp. There an 18-year-old civilian kid experienced 13 weeks of psychological and physical conditioning to transform him into a US Marine: prior civilian behaviors are inappropriate and heavily criticized, "knock off that cheap civilian crap!"; surrounded by examples of the behaviors and values that are appropriate to my new role, e.g., aggressiveness, instant obedience to orders, placing the welfare of the unit before one's self, etc.; and then daily reinforcement by exhibiting those behaviors and attitudes. All of this training was necessary for my new role, but definitely motivated by fear, i.e., avoiding the wrath of my Drill Instructor. Okay, so much for my history, but today it still remains true that fear is a great motivator with enough of it, you can get people to do anything. Enter Covid-19, a situation that has continued for the past seven months I don't know whether all readers will agree, but they've experienced a boot camp of their own and the conditioning effects thereof. Wearing a mask, social distancing, bumping elbows in lieu of handshaking do you remember a time that you didn't do it? With my lifestyle and where I live I missed the boot camp; hence, when I go out in public I have to concentrate on the protocols. Anyway, this is not to say that all these measures are not necessary, but it should be a lessons-learned for the public at large. This is an election year and according to the polls there's a possibility the Democrats will control Washington. If that does come to pass, be forewarned that the Green New Deal is being dusted off right now piecemealed through the Democratic Party Platform for 2020. Any attempt at implementation, and the economic damage it could do, is dependent on how much fear of climate change can be impressed on the general public. So if you are enjoying the Covid-19 experience on your lives, you're going to love the ramifications of the Green New Deal.
