There have been several comments on how great D70 does with money management and that the latest $75M bond issue is a “no brainer”.

Perhaps, but every day we see a write up in the Chieftain on what a specific school needs and every single one seems to need a roof replacement and HVAC replacement. Since all the schools are over 50 years of age that is not a surprise to anyone who has the slightest knowledge of building maintenance.

We are told once again “no tax increase”. Well, that is the “guess” that the administration is making assuming that the current levy will support an additional load of $75M on top of what we already have. If it doesn’t, it is very clear that the levy can be increased without any voter approval because it is covered in the current proposal. In any event, kids going to school today will still be paying for these bonds when they are grandparents.

My problem is not that the needs are probably valid based on the age of the buildings but rather that at the time the 2013 issue was proposed, I personally met with D70 officials and I specifically asked why almost all the money at that time was earmarked for athletic facilities with very little or nothing going to repair roofs, HVAC systems, inefficient window systems, etc. My question fell on deaf ears because apparently football fields were more important and a higher priority, and here we are just seven years later with a building deficiency crisis.

I do not consider that good management; but rather it is completely irresponsible.
