There is a nationwide trend involving fraudulent unemployment benefit claims, and the scam has increased recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the rise in unemployment claims associated with COVID-19, there has also been a rise in fraudulent claims and other instances of fraud or identity theft.
Scammers send information about an unemployment claim that was never filed by the victim. Many of the people receiving the information are employed. The scammers generally identify victims from the information they have obtained by stealing identities, data breaches, etc. Information sent to potential victims can include a pin number and an unemployment card for unemployment benefits. These cards are dark blue and say US Bank debit Visa ReliaCard on the front. The cards may come in your own name or someone else’s name with your address. Many people receiving them don’t even realize they are anything beyond a regular credit/debit card.
