The 8th Grade Varsity volleyball team proved you should never underestimate the underdog. Craver entered the District tournament as underdogs with a 0 – 5 league record and an overall record of 5 - 6 but walked away district champions.

The three day District tournament began last Tuesday at Pleasant View Middle School. The 8th Grade Varsity team, led by veteran Coach Beth Burns, played Skyview in the first round of the tournament winning the match in three games. This win advanced Craver to the semi-final round Wednesday where they faced Vineland at Vineland Middle School. Once again Craver came away victorious as they knocked Vineland out of the tournament in only two games, advancing themselves to the District finals on Thursday.

Thursday’s finals were played at Skyview Middle School in Pueblo West. Craver and Pleasant View went head-to-head in the final match for the chance to become District Champs. Pleasant View easily took the first game in a 13 – 25 victory. Craver fought back and took the second game in a close 25 – 22 win. Tied at one game each the match came down to the final game. Both teams fought hard for the championship but in the end Craver was crowned the winner with a score of 15 – 13.

The 7th Grade Varsity team, led by Coach Sally Harrison and consisting of players Megan Robins, Maddy Schwab, Bryna Burns, Malinda Gookin, Mandy Toman, Eryn Salinas and Taylor Henderson, also played in the District tournament. They entered the tournament with a league record of 4 – 1 and an overall record of 7 - 1. The 7th Grade Varsity played Swallows Charter Academy in the first round and came away victors. They advanced to the semi-final round but lost to Pleasant View.

Although the JV teams did not play in the District tournament their accomplishments should not go unnoticed. “Each of the teams had different things they improved upon. Some of them were learning the skills while others needed to improve upon their teamwork” said Coach Burns. “Overall the season was a great success for everyone” added Burns.
