Randy Short is Pastor of the Rye Home Methodist Church. He and his wife Donna have made Rye their home for the second time. He was first appointed to the Rye Methodist Church from 2002-2004. He next served in Trinidad and was re-appointed to Rye in July 2008. He plans to stay here until he retires.
Short calls himself a “career changer” who first qualified for ministry in 2001. A native of New York State, Randy’s first degree is in music, his first love. He received a Bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York and then moved to Boulder, Colorado to complete a graduate degree in music. He worked for ten years as the executive director of an arts and music education organization in Boulder. Short then moved into the computer industry for the next 15 years. He spent eight and a half of those years as a database administrator for the Colorado State Legislature. He has also done a little substitute teaching.
Short commuted to Kansas City for five years to attend the St. Paul School of Theology. He completed his training in July 2007. As a career changer, he says, “I entered ministry with all of my life experiences.” He says that it was interesting to be a student again, and he enjoyed the study and discussions.
Short and his wife Donna were married in 1970. He says that they were not only high school sweethearts but also junior high sweethearts, having met in the 8th grade. They have one daughter, two sons, a four-year-old grandson, and a five-year-old granddaughter. Their children and grandchildren all live in northern Colorado.
While living in Trinidad, Short was involved with a chorale, where he sang and played piano. He says that his musical training has shown him that tempo and balance hold the keys to a lot of things in life. One of his goals for the church is to regulate the tempo and create a broader balance. He said that just as there are many musical styles, there are also many church styles.
One of his personal missions is to serve as a Spiritual Care Volunteer for the Sangre de Cristo Hospice. He is available for spiritual care visits as requested for hospice patients and their families in the Greenhorn Valley area.
Short plans a Veterans’ Day prayer service in the evening and an outdoor prayer wall. He is dedicated to providing spiritual encouragement to veterans. He said that the Faith Circle of Ecumenical Women also pays visits to VA nursing homes to serve people from the Greenhorn Valley.
In discussing the changing demographics of the church, Short noted that, “It is important to be faithful to our history and who we are and to encourage people to be part of the family of God.” He asks, “What am I willing to give up to be meaningful to more people?”
When asked about his favorite scripture, Short quoted Micah 6:8. “He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Sunday worship services and Children’s Church at the Rye Home Methodist Church are at 10:00 a.m. Adult discussions are at 8:30 a.m.
