Freshman Michael Atencio lost a heartbreaking overtime match in the quarterfinals 9-7 but didnít let that stop him during the rest of the State Wrestling Tournament held at the Pepsi Center in Denver last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Atencio put the Friday morning loss behind him and placed third in the 2A, 113-pound class.

Sophomore teammate Zach Ruiz also got an opportunity to take his place on the medal stand with a 6th place finish in the 106 lb. weight class. Senior Colton Sims, 126 lbs., won a match but fell short of placing in his final opportunity as a Rye High School wrestler.

After the loss to Logan Lewis of Highland, who finished the tournament in second place, Atencio scored a second period fall, a first period fall, a win by injury default and a 12-0 decision for third place against Adrian Nieto, Cedarridge who spent the entire third period trying not to get pinned. There was little drama in his final matches. Atencio ended his freshman year with a 35-3 record.
