Saturday, May 11th, found myself and about a hundred others at Rye Baseball’s home field for the Sante Fe League District pigtail games. The weather was great, about 60 degrees, and partly sunny. A perfect day for baseball! The teams involved included Rye, Rocky Ford, Holly, and Fowler. Game one started at 11am, and featured Rye versus Rocky Ford.

Rye Coach Graham called on right handed Senior Damon Elarton for the start. Elarton was again dialed in, throwing a complete game. I counted a total of 73 pitches thrown, with 13 strikeouts and two scattered hits for the opposition.

Rye’s bats were slow to get rolling. Rocky Ford’s starting pitcher delivered from the stretch ? from the start. He threw a bunch of junk (change ups and curve balls) which kept Rye’s hitters off balance for the first four innings. He recorded a total of eight strikeouts, and had Rye hitters flying and grounding out. The score was zero to zero through the 4th inning. That is, until the 5th inning when all H-E- double hockey sticks broke loose. Rye bats finally found their moxy, and started smacking the ball. Damon Elarton had a couple of hits and two RBIs in the 5th. Brock Benz had a fly ball RBI in the 5th. Johnny Marquez had a double and a single. Brice Benz had an infield single and a RBI in the 5th. Robert Buford also had a single with a RBI in the 5th as well.

Rye’s defense saved the game though. In the 6th inning, Rocky Ford had bases loaded with two outs, when their batter hit a shot to left field. It looked like they were going to score. However, the fans were treated to the defensive play of the game. The ball was hit hard on a line towards left center, but Michael Valdez covered a lot of ground and made a diving catch to save the shutout, and end the inning.
