Yogi Berra was famous for the quote “It ain’t over till it’s over.” Well, unfortunately, the State Championship eluded the Thunderbolts. On Saturday, May 25th, Runyon Field in Pueblo was host to the 2019 Class 2A High School Baseball State Championship tourney. The four teams involved were Fowler, Peyton, Wiggins, and Rye.

At 10 am, your Rye Thunderbolts and the Fowler Grizzlies started the day with a District 6 rematch from May third, when Rye overpowered Fowler in a double header, winning 13-3 and 18-2, respectively. As a side note, Rye had also beaten Peyton on April 30th, 7-4. The weather this day was fairly warm, about 60 degrees, calm, and mostly sunny.

Coach Graham called on Rye Ace Damon Elarton for the start. The game had an ominous beginning though, when Fowler’s batter stroked a liner to right field. The ball took a hard bounce to the right, getting passed the Rye defender. The batter continued running, scoring an inside-the-park home run. Elarton settled down, and got out of the inning with that one run being the only damage.

In Rye’s half of the first, Fowler’s pitcher got three of the first four Rye batters to fly out. Johnny Marquez was the only bright spot, smacking a double to the left field fence. Unfortunately, he was left stranded.
