The Rye High School Boys’ Golf Team took first at Desert Hawk Golf Course on September 3 and virtually sealed up the Santa Fe League Championship. The event was the third of four Santa Fe League tournaments and the Thunderbolts have won all three and carry an 85-stroke lead over Swallows Charter Academy going into the final meet at the Rocky Ford Invitational on September 14.

As a team the Thunderbolts show a 283 with Swallows Charter Academy behind at 291. Rye’s Chance Donlon took first individually with a score of 80. Donlon is a sophomore. Johnny Marquez shot 100; Robert Buford, 103; and Blaine Roy, 118.

The six-team tournament added Florence and Pueblo West to the four Santa Fe League schools.

“We feel pretty good about our lead going into our last match at Rocky Ford,” commented Head Coach James Buford. “. We will buckle down this week and next week to close some scoring gaps we struggled with today. Today’s tournament was a battle and brutal. The course played tough and tight we had to battle some 30-40 mph winds for half of the day which didn’t help our scoring efforts and the golf course got the best of us.”
