Atencio and Miller Claim Gold at Pete Gomez Invitational

Michael Atencio, and Cole Miller won gold medals and the Rye Thunderbolt wrestling team placed 11th out of 29 teams at the Pete Gomez Invitational held at John Mall High School in Walsenburg.

The home team John Mall team won the tournament but lost a pair of gold medal matches to Atencio and Miller. John Mall is rated as 6th in the state in 2A.

At 120 lbs. Atencio moved his record to 7-1 with a pair of falls and a major decision before he faced Dale VanMatre, John Mall in the finals. Atencio won the match 7-0. He and VanMatre had also faced each other the night before and Atencio won that match 5-2. Atencio is ranked #1 in the state at 120 lbs.

Miller is ranked 4th in 126 and ended up in the finals against John Mallís Chris McKenna who is ranked 7th in 2A. On Friday night Miller decisioned McKenna and on Saturday in the finals of the tournament Miller pinned McKenna in overtime.

Miller also won a technical fall, fall and a decision to get into the finals and increase his record to 11-1 for the season.
